About us
An independent press publishing rigorous gender critical non-fiction in long and short form, from those at the sharp end of contemporary social and political struggles.
Jo Phoenix
I founded Phoenix Publications Ltd because of my own experience of dealing with a variety of trade and academic publishers who are not interested in or see gender critical works of nonfiction as either too controversial or not commercial enough. Phoenix Publications is an independent press publishing gender critical non-fiction in long and short form - books, booklets, reports, memoirs, testimonies - from those at the sharp end of contemporary social and political struggles. Scope will broaden into adjacent categories - fiction for instance - as the press develops and submissions warrant. The format range is deliberate and is there to plug the current gap between academic publishers who are wary of publishing gender critical work and established trade publishers who want books that are highly commercial. For now, Phoenix Publications Ltd exists because I believe there is an audience who are keen to read well written, informed books in this field.
I believe there to be a place in the market for a small independent publishing house that produces high quality work. I see non-fiction as being the category of publication best used to start up a GC publishing house because the gender critical audience has a strong appetite for timely, evidence-led work that can be produced and circulated in weeks rather than years
I bring to Phoenix Publications thirty years of experience writing, editing, and developing long-form non-fiction. I am an established author with several books and nearly one hundred articles and chapters in print across criminology, feminist theory, and the politics of sex and gender. I have served on the editorial boards of journals and have spent most of my academic career helping others develop argument, evidence, and prose — the core editorial work any press depends on. Phoenix Publications is, in effect, the redirection of that capacity towards a readership and a body of work that mainstream publishers are increasingly unwilling to serve.
We publish work in three strands: gender critical nonfiction and academic monographs and essay collections; memoir and first-person testimony from contemporary social and political struggle; and occasional pamphlets and short-form work on questions the moment demands. But as a young press, all proposals will be carefully considered.
